Introducing the “Strong Readers = Strong Leaders” campaign

The “Strong Readers = Strong Leaders” campaign was launched by the Mississippi Department of Education in May 2015 to help parents, educators and stakeholders with literacy tips and information.  The campaign consists of this website, social media channels, coloring sheets, a TV public service announcement, a radio public service announcement and starter videos.

The “Website Graphics” section contains 3 sets of web ready graphics that you can use on your own sites to link to the Strong Readers website.

An important part of the site is the mentorship suggestions and practices located at

http://strongreadersms.com/mentors/.

Mentoring is an important tool in literacy.  The Program for Research and Evaluation for Public Schools at Mississippi State University developed a system of best practices and compiled a list of partners to help your district implement a mentorship program. Please share it with pertinent personnel in your district.

Also, please feel free to share any of the information, videos or PDFs with your parents and stakeholders.  Your help in promoting “Strong Readers = Strong Leaders” is vital to its success.

Mentor.

A mentor is a special kind of helper who works with others in a constructive and positive way so that both mentor and mentee can grow through the relationship.

Nowhere is that more evident than in the role of reading mentors who help younger students learn to read.

The Mississippi Department of Education invites you to join the “Strong Readers = Strong Leaders” initiative by reading to a child today.

Mentorship is an opportunity to build a unique and personal relationship with young students. Watch this short film to learn how you can become more involved in helping our schools and our state grow and succeed.
