The Kindergarten through 3rd grade English Language Arts (ELA) standards are a list of what  students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. By the end of 3rd grade, students should be able to:

  • Independently read and understand various types of literature and informational texts
  • Use details from texts to ask and answer questions about characters, themes and points of view
  • Be able to distinguish between literal and nonliteral language
  • Refer to parts of texts in appropriate terms such as chapter, scene and stanza
